What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of atoms and their interactions. Atoms are the smallest divisible physical entities – at least before we discovered quarks – and their interactions are of fundamental importance to understanding the physical world. Chemistry is integral to both biology and physics, and is often considered as the science central to all sciences.
Chemistry is based on the attraction of negative and positive charges and the repulsion of like charges. The basis for charges in chemistry are subatomic particles – protons and electrons. The differences in the amounts of these subatomic particles are largely responsible for the differences between different types of atoms. These can be easily visualised using the periodic table.
Chemistry can be roughly divided into organic chemistry, physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry. Organic chemistry deals with molecules found in biology. Physical chemistry is the study of laws that govern chemical systems and reactions – for instance the speed (kinetics), energy and likelihood of reactions happening spontaneously (entropy). Inorganic chemistry deals with inorganic elements such as silicates but also typically touches on magnetism, quantum mechanics and other concepts that do not fit into the other 2 classifications.
VCE Chemistry
VCE Chemistry is the first instance where most Melbourne high school students encounter chemistry. In VCE, chemistry is typically considered the hardest science. This is largely due to the relatively difficult stoichiometric calculations – that are often difficult for students to grasp. They are not well explained nor intuitive – as there is nothing that’s similar in other mathematical subjects.
VCE Chemistry is divided into Units 1 and 2 and Units 3 and 4. These units make up Year 11 and 12 VCE Chemistry respectively. Only Units 3 and 4 matter for the purposes of obtaining a study score and ATAR, however many concepts in Units 1 and 2 of VCE Chemistry make their way into Units 3 and 4 and are built upon, especially stoichiometric calculations. Therefore, a lack of understanding of calculations in chemistry can drastically set a student back in Year 12 Chemistry.
Despite VCE Chemistry being the hardest of the VCE sciences, it is the best rewarded. Typically, you can expect a 4-5 scaling on average, which can give you a huge boost in ATAR.

Chemsitry at University
Chemistry at university only gets harder. University chemistry courses emphasise 3D molecule interaction, quantum mechanics, organic molecule synthesis and many other very complicated subject matters. The jump from VCE Chemistry and University Chemistry is huge, and many students struggle to keep up.
It’s not only the math that gets tricky, it’s the extremely intricate chemical pathways that need to memorised, and the 3D manipulation of molecules – remember to buy a molecular model kit!
Chemistry at University – at least in first year, is often a pre-requisite to many biological and medical subjects and so has a very high enrolment. It is offered as part of Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne and many other universities. In second and third year chemistry majors are typically split up between physical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry and chemical engineering type subjects.
Chemistry Private Tutors
Many students seek private tutors to help them learn chemistry. This is a great way to boost your grades. Private tutors for chemistry can help breakdown complicated chemical subject matters into manageable and easy to understand ideas. They can help you through the math that chemistry entails – especially when you are first starting out in VCE Chemistry.
Chemistry is a science with many logical tricks and shortcuts that can not only save you time on an exam, but can make you more accurate in your reasoning and calculations. Why spend the time solving 3 problems when with a little logic you can greatly simplify an equation to just 1 problem? A tutor can help you understand chemistry on a fundamental level so that you can work through chemistry assignments, tests and exams as efficiently as possible.

VCE Chemistry Private Tutors In Melbourne
VCE Chemistry tutors are common – every student with over 35 study score in chemistry wants to be a tutor. But why hire someone with little to no experience, and who could not achieve an awesome study score themselves!? You need someone who is a proven tutor – patient, great at communicating, and above all capable of helping your child obtain the best possible grade in VCE Chemistry.
There are many websites that catalogue hundreds of tutors, and you could hire one of them. However, these are not vetted tutors, nor are they the best tutors for the job. Tutor Storm is a boutique service that offers only the very best private tutors for VCE Chemistry. Each tutor is carefully selected based on their academic record, communication skills, experience and each tutor is background checked before they are hired. Be confident in your choice of tutor, hire a Tutor Storm private tutor!
